Exponentially fresh.

I don’t understand how a guy affiliated with this…

…can make something as smooth-sounding as this.

Frank Ocean – lovecrimes

For the last week or so I’ve essentially had Frank Ocean’s “nostalgia,ULTRA.” on repeat any time that I’m sitting at the Macbook doing anything. I seriously just put it on shuffle and let it rock, skipping a skit here and there because I don’t care to hear “bitches talkin’,” as hilariously literal as that is. Let me put this little tale into timeline format though, maybe that will help.

2011 begins and I’m living life as usual. Drinking, sobering up, drinking again, writing about Hip Hop. The usual.

I hear people talking about Odd Future and spitting out this weird acronym, but I’m too busy listening to my five favorite albums of the year thus far to care.

I see a video of Odd Future on Jimmy Fallon. I think gee, that really is odd, I wonder if they have a future?

Odd Future starts screaming out #Fuck2dopeboyz and suddenly I care a little more, but only in that “fuck my friends? Well, fuck you too” sense of the word.

I get a message from Brian Allonce to check out this guy Frank Ocean’s latest project. I shrug it off and make a mental note in case I go on a downloading spree in the near future.

Dart Adams tells me I need to check out Frank Ocean. This time I listen, no shots at Brian because I trust his musical judgment, but because it’s very rare that Dart recommends music for me to listen to.

I did no prior research – had no idea he was affiliated with Odd Future, had no idea he has written songs in the past for people like John Legend, had no idea this was singing and not rapping, I knew nothing. I opened the file, immediately thought to myself that this reminded me of Drake before Drake blew up, and decided I liked it.

When I found out that he was rockin with the same people as that crazy guy Tyler the Creator as part of the Odd Future movement I almost didn’t believe it. I had to Google that shit and confirm it with at least five websites. Because, really, I still don’t get Odd Future. Their sound still irritates my ears and I just don’t understand their gimmick, or utter lack thereof since therein lies their appeal. Or something. I had to do a double take to see if I was indeed listening to Hot 97 when I heard “novacane” on the radio. And not on Rosenberg’s show, either, which is the only time I’ve heard Odd Future on the FM airwaves.

I know I haven’t given Odd Future enough of a shot, but is Frank Ocean’s project like their group’s mentality just wrapped up in different packaging? Because he’s definitely on some loner, dark, depressed, youthful scorned shit at times, which is exactly what the people I know who fuck with Odd Future seem to like about them. He just does it so smoothly. It’s so easy on the ears. He says things the same way I would have thought to say them, just with a much better singing voice. It’s so easy to relate to. And I know I’m not the only one that has made the Drake comparison, so now I wonder if Frank Ocean indeed has the potential to become as big as Drake grew to be.

All I know is that Frank Ocean as a solo artist surpasses Frank Ocean the Odd Future Wolf Gang affiliate. Frank Ocean, the guy that sings about childhood angst due to absentee fathers and the deteriorating concept of marriage in American culture, surpasses Frank Ocean, the affiliate of that guy who jumped on Jimmy Fallon during that performance with the creepy looking broad on stage with all those lawn gnomes. And not just because Odd Future said “fuck 2dopeboyz.” But yeah, also because Odd Future said “fuck 2dopeboyz” and went on that tangent with those threats and shit. Fuck my peoples? Fuck y’all too.

But this dude Frank Ocean makes some good ass music. I’m just sayin’.

Download “nostalgia,ULTRA.” if you haven’t already.

woah…thanks for this. I also never really got on the OFWGKTA bandwagon but “lovecrimes” is great. Definitely has an older Drake vibe to him and perfect for a spring drive mix.

Odd Future prob won’t be on my playlist anytime soon. But Frank Ocean’s solo work will be a regular on the iPod.

Gotty didn’t say this outloud, he did like this post on Google Reader.

OFWGKTA isn’t all just Tyler and Earl. Guys like Hodgy and Domo are more stoner/just fucking around kind of shit. They are pretty multi-faceted. I understand why some people aren’t fucking with them – I get it. But I think a lot of people assume one thing about the COLLECTIVE based on a few of their members. Just saying.

You hip hop bloggers are such traditionlist. You want to hear hip hop sound like the glory days. You only want it to be about the struggles of life, girls, cars and women. Stuff gets old and I’m tired of rapper singing the same tune. I felt like I already heard most of the songs coming out these days anyways. Odd future and Lil B represent change and I think your scared of it. Plus these dudes are being themselves they ain’t pretending to be some gangster selling 40 kilos. You guys are lame. And if you see the history about why Tyler says fuck 2dopeboys maybe you’d feel him .

Who’s a Gotty?

Anyway,

Khal, you’re right. It’s not fair to judge the whole group based off their kooky frontrunners. But it’s also not my fault the other guys allow themselves to play the background so heavy that I never really get to know them. Their sound also doesn’t compel me to want to hear more. Then again I was a Drake naysayer way back when. I definitely had to eat my words on that one. Could happen again.

L. If Lil B represents the future of this shit then I quit. I don’t need everything to sound the same or like the old shit (I’d definitely say frank ocean has a unique yet welcome sound) but just because something is different doesn’t mean it will be good. How do you know these guys are being themselves? Do you know them personally? Because if so youre biased about the 2dopeboyz beef too, just as I am. I know enough to know it’s stupid and running around screaming fuck people is immature and accomplishes nothing, especially making me want to listen to your music any more than I already didn’t. Ive never been a fan of musical beefs, odd future or otherwise.

The Frank Ocean joint is really smooth, I love “We All Try” and “American Wedding” are my joints I play at all times of the day. I am a fan of these kids and I understand your bias over them for they have said many disrespectful things toward people you know and I understand that completely. Now I as a fan of Frank and other members of this group, I will say that out of all the OFWGKTA releases, the one I would recommend to anyone first would be “EARL” for being 16 I think, this kid who is MIA for whatever reason, but his style and flow is better than cats who have are twice his age and been rapping since they were his, so if you were to listen to any record, I would recommend that one, title track aside for obvious reasons; and as far as I can tell that is an obvious diss to your friends. As far as Frank goes he does kind of fit, for in interviews he has talked about being angry cause of label politics and that loner stoner depressing thing fits as well.

[...] Anyone that is complaining about hip-hop/soul/r&b music sucking nowadays, either only listens to the radio or just doesn’t consider me a friend.  Man, so much solid music is out there. It may not be classic or “illmatic” levels, but appreciate that the quality work is out there.  Every girl you date has to be Alba-status, just make sure the one you love is, nahmena (c) Ghostface. So, enjoy this music on the strength of my recommendation.  If you want to do research, read this. [...]

@Amanda – you’re right in some aspects, although many might not know who Hodgy is. since OF got hype, the main names thrown out are Tyler and Earl. Hodgy and Domo have been putting out shit that people who fuck with, say, Curren$y or Wiz or KRIT or those ilk would fuck with, they just don’t get the exposure that Tyler does, for good or ill. The spacey instrumentalist Jet Age Of Tomorrow is OFWGKTA, but like Frank Ocean, it doesn’t fit the peg people try to throw them into. It’s an odd outfit, and we’ll see how Tyler’s album does – if dude gets a lot of exposure, I imagine the rest of them will be getting more play (although I don’t think a guy like Mike G is really gonna get signed to a major).

How could you even say Lil B is the future? Have you HEARD his raps? They’re completely babbling about the same typical shit of his ‘thug life’. He is nothing new to the hip hop era.. he is simply a rapper who has no talent and uses ‘unique and different’ as an excuse to his horrible rhymes. Odd Future is completely different so don’t ever put LIL B next to ODD FUTURE.Secondly.. this post was mostly about Frank Ocean who is so perfect. I love his music and I don’t think he is anything like Drake. Drake produces great music but his actual singing talent isn’t that great. Frank Ocean’s ‘We All Try’ And ‘Dream Killa and ‘Thinking About You’ are a million times better than Drake’s Marvin’s Room or Trust Issues. He also shows his high range of vocals and uniqueness to adapt to almost any type of beat. He’s not plain and doing the same type of music like R’N'B artist such as R. Kelly or Trey Songz. He’s always switching it up. Yet everyone glorifies Drake like he is the second coming. Hip hop artist give people what they want to hear.. and franky people listen to ‘artist’ like Soulja Boy, and other horrible rappers. Music artist are nothing with out their fans if they do it to gain fame which is what majority of them do. If you want to hear some new stuff stop listening to main stream stuff because you won’t find it. Luckily Frank Ocean is one of the few people rising up with popularity but staying true to himself.

Someone posted, “You hip hop bloggers are such traditionlist.” WHAT?!? Odd Future “kids” have no musical ability whatsoever excluding Frank Ocean). It makes me crazy when people refrence them as “the future”. They are the “marylin Manson” or that “horror rap” crap in the 90′s. All they have achieved is maintaining shock value and it is also there only gimick as well. I am puzzled however by the fact that Frank is still associating with them? He can write, sing, and conseptualize and has a bright future…Why is he still associating with these guys? Frank has made millions writing for others and he even dresses like those fools. Hip hop has evolved so much through the years with sharper lyricism, intelligence, even meshing genres. And to act like Odd Future “is” the future means to me one of a few things: You do not truly appreciate the art or (sorry if this is rude) you are an idiot. I obviously can’t see into the future, however I bet by 2012 the whole group is finished while Frank will be evolving himself with Jay and Yeezy supporting him now. It just blows my mind how a person could enjoy the other members!?! The blakroc project for example: whity, intelligent lyricism, mixing it up with an alternative band…Are you going to say that Odd Future is better? No way, and that was just off the top of my head!

One other thing: People whom use the “F” word EVERY other word, lack the ability to properly conceptualize as well as think creativity.

I think you all are missunderstanding Odd Future. They have all different styles throught the group to keep interest. Frank ocean is to keep the R & B crowd, Earl is to keep the lyricalists, Tylers for those people that just like random sh*t, etc.
@ MIDDLE C
Maybe if you took a second to ignore the F word, you would understand that Tyler is intellegent. The way someone speaks just has to do with the enviroment they were raised in, and in no way hinders their creativity. If you are saying that the F word hinders creativity, then you are saying that a british accent does the same, or a spanish accent.

Also… I don’t really care for Tyler as well. I throughly enjoy Earl Sweatshirt, and I really like Mike G. I am now also starting to get really into Frank Ocean, ever member has their own style, and their own strengths. I think before you say Tyler is in the wrong for saying “Fuck 2DopeBoyz” you should understand the situation. This article should help you understand a little better. http://www.eastexclusives.com/2011/03/18/2dopeboyz-vs-odd-future/
